This series consists of reports, cables, resumes, personnel files, correspondence, postal intercepts, directives, interview transcripts, orders, and applications for Office of Strategic Services (OSS) employment. The series contains information about the recruitment and assignment of U.S. military personnel, U.S. civilian personnel, and foreign nationals. Many of the personnel files contain copies of job applications, as well as subsequent correspondence and forms relating to assignments, duty stations, and salaries. The series also contains reports and correspondence about conditions in foreign countries, OSS operations, and operational financial support.

Virginia Hall had a knack for languages and finding adventure. After attending college and graduate school at tops universities in the U.S., she went on to study and travel in Europe in the early 1930s, eventually taking a clerical position with the U.S. Embassy in Warsaw, Poland. Her next assignment took her to Izmir, Turkey, where she was in a serious hunting accident and lost her left leg below the knee.
